Madam, - Following the recent report in your paper I feel compelled to express my disappointment that Aer Lingus has dropped the shamrock from the tail-fins of four of its aircraft.
To my mind, the shamrock has always been an integral element of the airline's brand since its foundation. As a loyal customer who takes pride in flying Aer Lingus whenever possible I feel the decision to drop the shamrock confuses, diminishes and undermines the image of the national Irish airline.
I fully appreciate the need to advertise but fail to comprehend why it is not possible to locate the company's successful website address on the body of the aircraft and retain the shamrock on the tail.
The Aer Lingus shamrock inspires confidence. It is also attractive, inviting, reassuring, timeless and very much synonymous with the best of Irish. I urge Aer Lingus to restore it. - Yours, etc.,
PETER GAUGHAN, Monkstown, Co Dublin.
