Madam, - With reference to the article "Dull 'dwarf' now a radio star" in "Science Today" (May 31st), it is worth mentioning that Belfast woman, Jocelyn Bell-Burnell (1943-) discovered the pulsar while studying astronomy under Prof Antony Hewish in Cambridge University. Sir Martin Ryle and Antony Hewish were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in physics, which sparked controversy as Bell was not given recognition for her part in the discovery at the age of 24. However, Bell has since received numerous honours and awards for her contributions to science and her fascinating story can easily be accessed on the web. - Yours, etc,
OLIVE WARDELL, Celbridge, Co Kildare.
