Sir, – I refer to “New DIT campus will house just 10 per cent of students” (August 10th), which reported that DIT will “only” be providing 2,000 beds on its campus at Grangegorman. Surely this is good news? DIT currently has no on-campus accommodation, so this will add 2,000 new student accommodation beds in Dublin at a time when accommodation generally is in short supply in the capital city. When built, these units will accommodate up to 15 per cent of full-time students in DIT (part-time students are generally Dublin-based). This would be in line with norms in other universities in Dublin. Having a greater concentration of students living on campus would not be the norm and probably not good planning.
The development of other student accommodation elsewhere in the city is also to be welcomed, and a number of such developments are already under way. – Yours, etc,
Dr PAUL HORAN,
Head of Campus Planning,
