Dividing the housework

Sir, – Regarding Jennifer O'Connell's article about sexist elephants and housework ("Housework is the big, hairy, sexist elephant in the room", Magazine, May 18th), when my wife and I were working, we earned similar salaries and shared the housework 50/50. We are now retired and her pension is much larger than mine. Does this mean that I should do the larger share of the housework? I also spend more time minding our grandchildren than she does, so could this be offset against housework? On the other hand, the reason I spend more time with the grandchildren is because she travels up the country to help mind her centenarian father. It's so head-wrecking. It's not just Jennifer O'Connell and her friends who have these problems.– Yours, etc,

TOM FARRELL,
