Sir, - Kevin Myers gives a weird account of the doctrine of transubstantiation (An Irishman's Diary, August 7th).
As he puts it, "during the consecration the host becomes the body of Jesus Christ. . ." and he adds: "This piece of human flesh, of tongue and breast and bowel, is then consumed by the worshipful."
It may be that Mr Myers has been exposed to a lot of crummy and heretical sermons about the Eucharist. That such an intelligent man should equate it with cann-ibalism is certainly very weird.
I suggest he should at least consult the Catechism of the Catholic Church by Herbert McCabe, OP, and/or the Ecumenical Councils by Norman Tanner, SJ. - Yours etc.,
