Madam, - The bitterness in the letters to your newspaper (May 11th) following Roy Keane's amazing testimonial was sad and unnecessary. But the great joy, gratitude and admiration of hundreds of thousands of Manchester United, Celtic and Ireland supporters speak louder and will live longer.

Besides his immense skill, dedication and indomitable spirit on the pitch, Roy Keane's charity to the sick (particularly children), the blind and those in need will forever set him apart. Nobody can deny these qualities but some still chose to ignore them to meet their own miserable agendas. A resounding NO is the answer to James Ballantyne's question: "Have we done the Roy Keane thing now?" Not while we have memory, the ability to be thankful, and the urge to express wonder. - Yours, etc,
