Sir, - Mr Eoin Ryan, Minister for State, is to be complimented on allocating €28 million to fund local initiatives aimed at "diverting young people away from drugs" (The Irish Times, February 10th). The initiative is welcome, necessary and urgent.
But why is the drug alcohol totally ignored? Alcohol is a potent, addictive drug, causing devastating effects on health and massive social problems. It is the "gateway drug" through which the majority of our youth are introduced to illegal drugs. With 70 per cent of our 16-year-olds now drinking alcohol, the consequences are undoubtedly serious.
In Ireland the problems associated with illegal drugs pale into significance compared with those of alcohol. Yet instead of addressing this serious issue, millions and millions are spent by the drinks industry in promoting and glamorising the drug.
Why the double standard? Is it because of the €5 billion we spend annually on alcohol. Where is our national alcohol policy?
May I humbly suggest to the Minister that for his "drugs initiative" to be successful, the "drink culture" in our society must be aggressively and urgently addressed? - Yours, etc.,
Dr MICHAEL LOFTUS,
Crossmolina,
Co Mayo.
