Madam, - I lost my position as Editor of the Irish Independent in 1970. Within days and unasked, Douglas Gageby commissioned me to write a news-feature series from the Continent for The Irish Times. He also gave me a retainer to contribute further articles as and when I wished until I secured full-time employment.
I heartily endorse all that has been, and will be, said about Douglas's journalistic achievements but will most especially remember his warm-hearted kindness and generosity towards a colleague in distress. - Yours, etc.,
LOUIS McREDMOND, Westerton Rise, Dundrum, Dublin 16.
