Sir, – Michael Kavanagh (September 28th) writes that there is a tradition in his school of not giving homework when Kilkenny wins the All-Ireland. Good for him!
Primary schools might consider taking this a step further by banning homework altogether, apart from enjoyable reading and fun activities, like a nature scrapbook. There can be so much hassle at home with children who struggle in school then struggling with homework, sometimes for up to two hours a night. There is also the waste of valuable time for the teacher trying to correct material of dubious educational value.
Primary schools work wonders every day, despite large classes. That should be enough. Let education be satisfying and fulfilling for our young children. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL O’CARROLL,
