Sir, - I read with astonishment the review by Anthony Clare of Professor Donal McCartney's History of UCD (Books, December 18th) and his assertion that the late Dr Michael Tierney and the late Archbishop of Dublin, Dr John Charles McQuaid were "two massive hate figures".
As a third-level student in the early 1960s, and for the record, in my limited dealings with Michael Tierney, at any rate, I found him to be a kind, considerate and understanding person who always answered his correspondence personally despite a busy work schedule. - Yours, etc.,
John Leonard, Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
