Sir, - What exactly is M. Gohery's point (September 10th)? The Irish Times employs a cartoonist - Martyn Turner - who is internationally acknowledged as one of the world's best, particularly when it comes to politics. The fact that he is not Irish is irrelevant; he has lived here for 30 years and demonstrates a far greater understanding of the nuances of the Irish character and politics than many natives. One of his gems often says more about a current story than the pages of surrounding newsprint. This would be a much poorer paper without his hilariously succinct insights.
Likewise, Gary Trudeau (another foreigner) brightens our mornings with his brilliant cast of characters. And Speedbump offers good, old-fashioned off-the-wall (foreign) humour. What more do we need? Certainly not an Irish cartoonist replacing any of these just because he's Irish. By all means, let one join them - but only on merit, not on nationality. - Yours, etc.,
Geraldine Gahan, Kilcullen, Co Kildare.
