Madam, - Noel Carr (August 4th) takes Prof Noel Wilkins (Opinion, July 29th) to task for suggesting that anglers should contribute to compensation for commercial fishermen if a ban were placed on drift netting. But, as I'm sure Mr Carr knows, the majority of anglers used to sell their catches to hotels and to certain wholesalers. Some still do.
When I was a boy, before trout farms started, I often made more money in two days then my teachers made in a week from selling my trout, and got some sport as well. And before the ban on anglers selling their catches came in, one of Ireland's most active salmon anglers, with access to fisheries in many parts, ate only one of his salmon each year - the one that he caught on the last day of the season. - Yours, etc,
ARTHUR REYNOLDS, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
