JOHN BECKETT,
Sir, - The way to reduce road accidents caused by drunk drivers is relatively simple, and it astounds me that the Government cannot see this.
Every weekend pub car-parks in urban areas are full. Those who believe that these cars are all being driven by "designated drivers" are fooling themselves. It should be standard practice to have at least one garda stationed outside every pub with a car park from 9 p.m. to closing time at weekends.
Drivers should be automatically breathalysed as they leave the car parks. This would have the immediate effect of forcing people to find alternative means of transport to and from the pub if they wished to drink. A Garda presence outside pubs would also reduce the incidents of violence and disorder as revellers make their way home.- Yours, etc.,
