Madam, – John Waters’s remarks (Opinion, May 29th) about the difficulties facing the non-drinker or moderate drinker in Ireland’s monoculture of pubs are cogent. Might it not be possible for the Government to compel pubs to provide a range of non-alcoholic drinks at reasonable prices to the consumer? I have paid over €5 for a rock-shandy on at least one occasion and the prices charged for all minerals and juices are similarly grotesque.

It would almost drive you to drink. – Yours, etc,
