Sir, - I have been following the debate on the use or misuse of mobile phones in moving vehicles with some interest. I cannot for the life of me understand the attitude of the Garda to this very serious matter of road safety. I was taught to drive professionally 43 years ago and the law was very clear: "The wheel must be held in both hands except to give a hand signal or to make a control movement".
To the best of my knowledge that law was never amended or adapted and is as relevant today as it was then.
The key issue was addressed by Colm O'Brien (September 8th), who hinted at the dangers of concentration lapses. Safe drivers have a very high degree of concentration and anything that interferes with this is a menace to them and other road users.
Through your popular (and responsible) Letters page I would ask the Garda to stop the prevarication and impose the law on irresponsible and potentially dangerous drivers. - Yours, etc.,
Simon Cullen, Birchview Heights, Dublin 24.
