Drivers and speed limits

Sir, – Clare O'Driscoll (March 23rd) is not alone in trying to decipher the policy on speed-restriction zones.

Here in the UK it requires an extraordinary level of mental discipline to maintain the parameters required to ensure one doesn’t drift above the limit. The motorist is a cash cow for the exchequer – nothing more, nothing less. To ensure that the driver remains on the road (there’s nothing to be extracted from disqualified drivers), we now have speed-awareness courses to allow errant motorists avoid a court appearance and points on the licence. This comes at a price, and allows the driver to carry on paying. – Yours, etc,
