Drug dealing on the quays

Madam, - Each day I walk the same path past the Dublin City Council offices and every day as I cross from Wood Quay to Merchants' Quay, I see the same drug dealers offering their merchandise as boldly and openly as if they were running a newspaper stand. Sadly though, it's not the daily read on offer but the daily fix.

Tourists gawp and double take, workers shake their heads in dismay and the punters shuffle nervously and whisper their order as if to be discreet in this corner of absolute indiscretion. So blatant is this daily scene that I would not be surprised to see sign being erected soon saying "Drugs for Sale". And yet I have witnessed a Garda presence perhaps half a dozen times over the course of a year. I could almost guarantee my local dealer and his buddy will be there again tomorrow - a scene repeated right down the north and south quays.

Make sense? Not to me. Familiar? Pretty much to everyone that walks the quays.

The solution? Answers on a postcard, please, to the next Minister for Justice. - Yours, etc,
