Madam, - I would like to fully endorse the sentiments expressed by Kevin Myers in "An Irishman's Diary" (November 2nd).
Having spent 10 years working in close association with the gardaí, I witnessed and attended at many road traffic accidents where alcohol was a major factor and death the end result. Drivers' attitudes to drink driving will not change until strict enforcement prevails and mandatory custodial sentences are handed out by the courts. The recent case in Roscommon where two people were killed by a drunk driver and a derisory fine of €2,000 was imposed must serve as an alarm call to the Minister for Justice.
Legislation is urgently required for random breath-testing and subsequent appropriate penalties. - Yours, etc,
Dr DENIS J LISTON, MRCGP, Bray, Co Wicklow.
