Sir - Would a deal not be possible based on an agreement (a) to open the centre doors as a routine at all stops, and (b) drivers to stop handling money, all tickets being pre-paid? There must be 20 per cent productivity available through reduction of queue-time and abolition of cash fumble-time.

I suggest that there is further productivity to be gained by strategically reconstructing the route system, designing it for random access, and ease of presentation on a comprehensible map, like the Paris Metro. All routes should be cross-city, the whole inner city being serviced by a mesh of cross-routes having easy interchange-points. Routes should of course interconnect where possible with the DART and mainline stations, and with the Luas, giving an integrated, random-access, mappable mesh with a strong rail component. - Yours, etc.,
