Sir, - Full marks to Sean Dublin Bay Loftus for his letter (August 11th) on Dublin Port. He is correct to point out that Dublin is one of the few capital cities to have a city centre location for its port container business. I raised this point at a recent meeting with representatives of the company. I also requested that they reconsider their proposal to fill in 52 acres of our bay.
Those who dismiss the rail option are condemning city motorists to 8,000 container lorries crossing the city each day. We all know in our hearts that the rail option is part of the solution to our major traffic problems. The investment is on the way. Let's take up Sean Dublin Bay's practical proposal.
This is also a wake-up call to the people of Dublin. We cannot let any group destroy our bay. It's a local community resource and we all have a duty to protect it. Filling in and damaging Dublin Bay is nothing but environmental vandalism. - Yours, etc.,
Cllr Finian McGrath, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9.
