Sir, - Dublin city and county suffers from an over-supply of people claiming to be trying to solve the city's traffic problems. What it needs is enforcement of the existing regulations. It is very easy to mount a speed checkpoint and collect untold bounty for the State coffers but it will do nothing to make driving in Dublin any easier, especially for those of us more reliant on wheeled transport than others.

An almost total absence of garda patrols in suburban areas coupled with very badly regulated traffic lights, worn out road markings and an extreme unwillingness to comply with rules and regulations makes any progress unlikely.

Irish motorists will not willingly obey, so appeals are a waste of time. European-style coercion would appear to be the only answer. When will the "experts" listen? - Yours, etc.,
