Sir, - It's not surprising that Conor Faughnan (June 4th) can find no argument against the modest proposals I made about motor traffic in the city. Perhaps he realises that, if the current escalation continues, restrictions are inevitable. But, as a spokesman for the car lobby, he is afraid to ask people to behave sensibly before they are forced to do so.

So rather than confront the inevitable, he responds with ad hominem remarks like "unhealthy attitude", an unfortunate epithet given the death, destruction and pollution caused by cars. Mr Faughnan reveals his own suspect attitude when he says that the car has been a great friend. This misguided anthropomorphism now gives machines parity with, if not precedence over, people in our cities. Sure, cars can be useful but they are only machines, there to be used and not to dominate. - Yours, etc.,

Cabinteely Green,
