Sir, - I would like to add to Jim Dunne's article (An Irishman's Diary, December 28th) on the Dunne clan, the energetic and far seeing John Dunne.
This man also came from the Slieve Bloom area and was parish priest of Saggart during the Famine. He was instrumental in the building of our lovely Gothic style parish church (1849) which was one of the first church's built outside the city after Penal Times.
This was a major feat for a country parish at this time and his achievement is commemorated in a fine stained glass window by the Dublin firm of O'Casey in the church.
John Dunne was parish priest in Saggart from 1832 to 1853 and should be acclaimed by the Dunne clan for his great work. - Yours
