Sir, - I was surprised to read your contributor Frances O'Rourke, writing on the subject of selling property by sealed offers (The Irish Times, March 5th), stating that a Dutch auction is one where the agent goes back and forth between bidders. This is, in fact, a form of private auction which she describes as "rare".

A Dutch auction is totally different, and is, if I am not mistaken, illegal in this country. It is defined in my dictionary as one in which the price is lowered by stages until a buyer is found. - Yours, etc.,
