Sir, – What a simply wonderful tale of morality by Eamonn McCann, drawn from the most capitalist of endeavours – professional football in England (Opinion & Analysis, December 31st).
Clearly, we should all aspire to the levels of socialist camaraderie and fraternal relations from prima donnas running around in shorts after a ball and being paid huge multiples of the average annual industrial wage on a weekly basis (Mesut Ozil reportedly makes €190,000 per week) and from the human decency and crafted insight of the bosses who preside over them. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – While Eamonn McCann’s call to every right-thinking football fan to support Arsenal’s campaign to win this season’s title is to be fully commended, does he expect Arsène Wenger to return the compliment by signing an orthodox left-winger during the January transfer window? That may take some divine intercession from Mother Teresa. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL CULLEN,
Sandycove,
Co Dublin.
