Sir, – The reaction to the resignation of Cathal Magee provides a depressing insight into the mindset of senior politicians and media commentators. One of the most senior public servants in the country is leaving his post, and Eamon Gilmore’s main concern is how and when he heard the news. Meanwhile, on the other side of the House, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin is equally perturbed, not by Mr Magee’s departure and its implications for the HSE, but by Mr Gilmore’s refusal to say how he heard the news! (Home News, July 20th). And the pol corrs are clearly salivating at the prospect of “cracks appearing in the coalition”.
Send in the clowns? Don’t bother, they’re here. – Yours, etc,
