Sir, – I note Mary Minihan’s report that the Department of Finance will be allowed to breach the embargo on public sector recruitment and take on about 40 economists (Front Page, June 4th).

I presume these economists will come from the same pool of economists that dominated the airwaves in the noughties, lecturing us all on the wonders of the free market, light regulation and the evils of the public sector?

The same economists who worked primarily in the banking sector and said and did nothing while the banks destroyed themselves and our economy?

Meanwhile, in the same paper I read about cuts to respite care and home help, both of which use public funds and employ public sector workers to deliver something the public actually needs. – Yours, etc,
