Madam, - I am really annoyed to hear the vintners blaming the downturn in their business on the recent smoking ban. As someone who enjoys (and more so now) a couple of pints on a Saturday night, I have noticed quite a drop in trade over recent years. This obviously cannot be blamed on the smoking ban, but is due entirely to the gross overcharging for pub products. How often have we read letters to this paper over the years about the overcharging and poor quality of service in pubs and restaurants?
May I suggest that, instead of moaning, these people wake up and smell the coffee (something they will find easier now that there is no smell of stale cigarette smoke) - and sort out their problems by providing a better service at realistic prices? Then maybe they will see their business grow again. - Yours, etc.,
JOE HARVEY, Glenageary Woods, Glenageary, Co Dublin.
