Eir a grievance

Sir, – Back in the 1960s, we used to play a game where four participants would put sixpence each in the pot and then take turns ringing the local telephone exchange. Each person would pass the phone on to the next player after two minutes. Whoever was holding the phone when the exchange answered picked up the money. That game often lasted for 45 minutes. This morning I tried to get through to Eir but gave up after 50 minutes. Haven’t we made extraordinary progress in the last 60 years! – Yours, etc,

SEAMUS REYNOLDS,
