Sir, – The headline over Arthur Beesley's article (Weekend Review, March 12th), "Will Dublin ever introduce an elected Lord Mayor?" is unfairly misleading.
Dublin has an elected Lord Mayor – elected in the same way as the Taoiseach by their peers in the chamber to which they were elected by the people.
The question needs to be, will Dublin ever have a directly-elected mayor with executive powers, accountable to a powerful and resourced council.
I hope it does. To get there however we need a media that understands local government, a minister who wants to reform it and a department that is not allowed to continuously undermine it. – Yours, etc,
