Sir, - Now that the by-election in Dublin South Central is over, it is time to take stock of its environmental impact. Posters of candidates are still hanging from lamp-posts and no efforts have been made so far to remove them. When they are removed, the plastic straps used to hold them will be left behind, like those already there from previous elections.
I very much doubt if such posters influence the way the electorate votes. If they did, then surely Mr Mulcahy of Fianna Fail would have been a clear winner. His coverage far outweighed everybody else's.
This type of poster blitz should be outlawed. I cannot see how any candidate could defend their use and express concern for the environment at the same time. If outdoor advertising is required, then only the permanent poster sites should be permitted. - Yours, etc.,
Brendan M. Redmond, Hazelbrook Road, Terenure, Dublin 6W.
