Elections and quotas

Sir, – Aidan Coyle (January 20th) calls for a limit to be placed on the election of solicitors to the Dáil. In which reality does it make sense to limit the number of legal professionals elected to the very bodies where our laws are made?

Our present Dáil suffers from a drought of solicitors, with the Cabinet boasting just one qualified solicitor. To ensure that the well does not run dry in the next Dáil, might I suggest a quota to ensure a minimum number of solicitors are elected to the Dáil in future?

Perhaps once faced with the complaints of his or her constituents, those solicitors elected to the next Dáil might gain the “real-life experience” that Aidan Coyle feels our legal professionals so badly need. – Yours, etc,

DANIEL GRIFFIN,
