Madam, - Consider this unlikely election result: Fianna Fáil has its worst performance in decades (winning 67 seats); the Progressive Democrats lose half their seats, leaving them with just four; Sinn Féin makes no gains at all, remaining at five; and most independents lose their seats.

Guess what? The Fine Gael/Labour/Green rainbow would still not have won a majority. The paradox of the past 20 years remains unchallenged: Fianna Fáil can never win a majority and can never fail to be elected to Government. - Yours, etc,
