Sir, - Vincent Browne (Opinion, March 20th) offers an interesting analysis of the performance of the present Fianna Fáil-PD Government - and gives significant credit to Mary Harney and the PDs for a range of Government actions that would not have happened if Fianna Fáil had been in office on its own over the past five years.
He then warns against the outcome of the forthcoming election that presents the "most appalling vista": the return of Fianna Fáil with an overall majority. This prompts him to opt for what he terms the "second most appalling vista", voting to return Michael Noonan as Taoiseach.
Even by Mr Browne's own analysis this is very false logic. Surely the logic of his overall argument is that the best bet for the Irish electorate is to return the PDs in greater numbers in the forthcoming election, and let them act as a larger counter-balance to Fianna Fáil. After all, successive polls are showing a clear preference for a return of the FF/PD government option. - Yours, etc.,
Cllr JOHN MINIHAN,
Progressive Democrats
National Chairman,
Cork.
