Madam, - I strongly object to Constantin Gurdgiev's assertion (Opinion, June 8th) that "when desperation did characterise what it meant to be Irish, our compatriots fled this land in millions, abandoning that identity which held no value to them."
What research substantiates such a sweeping and insulting statement?
I emigrated in late 1993 and, like thousands of others, did so out of necessity. I have always been proud to be Irish and valued my identity. In my 11 years working and living abroad, I have met countless first-generation Irish people who have integrated successfully into their new communities while proudly promoting their Irish identity at the same time. - Yours, etc.,
KEN COVENEY, Reading, England.
