Madam, - It is often said Irelan's public transport is so poor because too few people use it. It is time for the Government to look to other countries for solutions to this problem.
Switzerland has a special discount card for people aged 16 to 25. This allows users large discounts and to travel free after 7pm on trains. This means that there is a strong financial incentive to use public transport. At the same time, young people get into the habit of using buses and trains and realise the convenience of not having to look for parking and being free to have a drink after work.
If such a system was introduced in Ireland it would encourage use of public transport and lead to improved services. - Yours, etc,
TOM SWEENEY, Kandersteg, Switzerland.
