Madam, - Christine Keaney's letter of April 14th comes as little surprise: the level of enforcement on our roads is both frightening and infuriating.
I choose to commute to work by suburban rail, and leave my car at home. Walking from Connolly Station to Mary Street each day I cross a handful of arteries into the city. Buses, HGVs and cars constantly drive through red lights at pedestrian crossings, block intersections, and sit stationary on yellow boxes. The number of these drivers engaged in another activity - on the phone, adjusting make-up, reading the paper - is laughable.
I have yet to see a single driver reprimanded by a garda.
What is the point in increasing the number of penalty-points offences when the existing ones are not enforced? If the basic rules of the road are not enforced under the noses of the Dublin public, how can anyone possibly expect adherence to the more serious rules on the roads throughout the country? - Yours, etc,
COLIN MURPHY, Riverwood Gardens, Carpenterstown, Dublin 15.
