Entrepreneurs – born or made?

Sir, – Michael Carey is behind the times in promoting entrepreneurship in secondary schools ("Entrepreneurs are made not born, so let's get training", Economics, May 16th). In 1967, I taught a boy who did not smoke, but who bought 20 cigarettes at a time which he later sold one at a time at a small profit to his fellow pupils who did. In those days, mind you, "entrepreneur" was a word chiefly found in a French dictionary. I must admit that his reasoning and way of thinking had, as I hope Michael Carey would agree, its own logic and needed no guidance. – Yours, etc,
