Sir, Recently the group of unions within the ESB balloted its members on whether to accept 3,000 redundancies. We are led to believe that this is a democratic process whereby the members of the union can determine their own future. My argument is that this so called democratic process does not include all interested bodies. I am speaking of the next generation of workers who might have hoped to get a job somewhere within the existing jobs pool.
The rationale used to dispose of the jobs in the ESB is that it needs to be a lean, mean, fighting machine, because of new competition from big power producers in Europe. I wonder are we doing anything to protect ourselves from further job losses in this country? Are we now watching our country being pawned off for the euro dollar? If this is the case I don't think this pawn ticket will ever be redeemed.
The unemployment heap in this country is too big already, let's not turn it into another unwanted euro mountain. - Yours, etc.,
