Sir, – I agree with Brian Hayes that the EU is good at many things ("EU could disintegrate on back of migration policy failure", Opinion & Analysis, October 30th). I also agree with him about Europe's failure to integrate its own and other citizens over the years. The EU and its institutions have over the years highlighted liberty and equality. However, fraternity has been neglected. And if the EU disintegrates it will be the failure of institutions to promote a spirit of fraternity, rather than the arrival of migrants and refugees. Goodwill is not enough. Colonial attitudes need to change as well if those who are different are to feel welcome, integrate and belong. Disintegration of the EU would be a disaster. – Yours, etc,
