EU and the price of medicine

Sir, – Your excellent editorial on the recent deal with the pharmaceutical industry ("A challenge ducked on drug costs," July 23rd) omits mention of a possible solution.

Why not remove restrictions from the pharmaceutical market so that we can buy our prescribed medicines from anywhere in the European Union?

Isn’t it within the spirit of the EU that we should be able to do this?

Why should we be trapped in a high-price bubble without any hope of release?

There are many safeguards that could be introduced to prevent illegal and counterfeit drugs getting through to us, but I fear that protectionism and vested interests in the pharma industry are preventing this change.
