FRANK O'BRIEN,
Sir, - We read with alarm Dana Rosemary Scallon's letter (June 3rd) about the EU's proposal to provide immediate funding for destructive child embryo research. It is quite unbelievable that our MEPs remained deadly silent while colleagues representing Germany, Austria and Italy opposed this immoral proposal.
Dana has warned the Irish peopled on many occasions of this possibility, which she described as the true intent of the EU and now it has become a reality exactly as she predicted.
We understand that the Council of Ministers of the EU are due to meet within days and that our Government's representatives intend to support this diabolical proposal. In reality our representatives have no constitutional, democratic or moral right to do so and they certainly have no mandate from the majority of the Irish people to commit taxpayers' monies to fund destructive research into the child embryo.
Accordingly, we now call on the Taoiseach, and all Irish MEPs to uphold the Irish Constitution, which still protects life from conception, and refuse to allow Irish taxpayers' money to be used in this manner. - Yours, etc.,
FRANK O'BRIEN,
Secretary,
Ireland for Life,
