Sir, – Mick Heaney (Radio Review of Marian Finucane, Weekend Review, December 17th) suggested that I based my views on the single European currency on dealings I had with central bankers. This is not what I said at all! I said that I felt that some in the Central Bank were unenthusiastic about Ireland joining the single currency especially if the UK decided not to join.
As we know these concerns were not listened to and the politicians decided to push ahead and join the euro project. The point I made on the radio is that the single currency is an economic project that has not been driven by economic concerns but rather by political motivation.
Consequently, in my opinion, it is fatally flawed and will fail. – Yours, etc,
