Madam, – It’s long past time the debate on abortion was ended and a modern, compassionate system implemented. The idea that we don’t have abortion in Ireland, when thousands of women travel abroad for the operation annually, is sheer hypocrisy. The anti-abortionists are of the same ilk who campaigned against sex-education and contraception down the years.

The least that should be enacted, by a free vote of parliament, would be to comply with the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. The problem would be definition of “risk”. Since every pregnant woman is at some risk, who defines, who decides? The State, a doctor, or the person taking the risk?
