Sir, – Who would possibly have believed 10 years ago that evictions would re-enter Irish history in 2012 (Home News, April 19th 20th)? We have entered a new age of barbarism. Have we learned nothing whatsoever from our tragic history? Have we not learnt the price of political sovereignty? Are there no lengths to which we will not go to propitiate the money gods?
Perhaps it takes the distress of a 71-year-old man and his 63-year-old partner (I am 69) to bring home to us once again the misery of evictions.
No matter if Brendan and Asta Kelly are or were once wealthy. We can all feel the panic and alarm at the prospect of losing the home we love. And let us make the short journey from Killiney to Ballymun or Tallaght. How many evictions there? Let our newspapers tell us the full story of this human misery. Indeed a catalogue of entirely unnecessary human misery. We can build 350,000 homes. But we cannot build them where people want and have to live. We pay taxes for the benefit of the rich but not the poor. We have lost our self-respect as a nation if we allow this to continue much longer. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – An unco-operative landlord gets evicted? Let’s keep our sympathy for those who deserve it. And let’s avoid the faux political outrage. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Is Occupy Killiney okay when you own a large property portfolio (Home News, April 20th)? – Yours, etc,
