RAPHAEL MURRAY,
Sir, - Like so many others, my wife and I were forced to emigrate during the ugly 1950s. We moved to Canada and raised two daughters. We never forgot our Irish roots and whenever possible we would return to Ireland on vacation. We always hoped to return to stay some day and recently we did.
We have been shocked to find that because of my age (71) I am unable to acquire car insurance. I hold a perfect driving record in an estimated 3 million miles of driving.
I received one quote for £3,500. This plus road tax is simply prohibitive. All around us we see price gouging.
So blow out your welcoming candles - we are sad and disillusioned, senior citizens living on pensions being forced to leave once more. Beware, those of you thinking of retiring to Ireland; for us it has been a costly mistake. -
Yours, etc.,
RAPHAEL MURRAY,
Ballyheigue,
Co Kerry.
