Madam, - Last week in a large, central Dublin hotel the charge for a pot of tea for two was €8.20. This for some tea leaves and hot water! Two sandwiches cost €15 and with a €3.07 service charge, the total bill was €26.27.

In the bar, a pint of Guinness was €4.80, a single Irish whiskey was €4.10 and a baby mixer was €2.30. A bottle of wine, available retail at €17.71, cost €46 (€40 plus €6 service charge).

Some American tourists were heard saying how horrified they were at the Irish prices and that they would certainly not return.
