Madam, - As a mature second- year student of English at UCC, taking part in an outreach programme based in Kenmare, I was disappointed to note Maureen Meleady's criticism of Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent (June 22nd). My class studied the novel this year and found it a fascinating insight into the world of the "big house".
Great credit is due to the staff of the English department who travelled to the two outreach centres of Kenmare and Cahirciveen nearly every weekend throughout the winter months and shared with us their love of literature. - Yours, etc.,
