Sir, - Regarding fadas ar strae, as a fluent Irish speaker, I am both irritated and embarrassed at the inability of civil servants to properly notorize all public notices and place names.

Poor translation from our adopted first language to the Irish language shows an attitude by our civil servants which approximates to less than lip service. Of the many outrageous translations I recall seeing on road signs "Mullach na Pise" (for Peamount) is the most glaring and annoying example. The absent sineadh fada on the `i' of Pise translates into the Latin Mons Veneris, a somewhat distracting roadsign! - Yours, etc.
