Madam, - I cannot help but feel relieved at Ireland's failure in the joint bid with Scotland to co-host the 2008 European Championships.

Primarily, this is because I feel that assurances made by the Government about a second stadium being in place by 2008 were totally insensitive to the electorate after the Budget, and in light of the economic crisis experienced in recent months.

As for those who say the Government would not have had to put in place these assurances had the GAA made Croke Park available, that is an entirely different issue. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - The announcement that Ireland and Scotland have not been chosen to host the European soccer championships in 2008 might be a disappointment for the Irish merchant classes and for those educated well beyond their intellectual capacity, but it should be a relief for those who would have to endure the consequences.

Within 24 hours of the announcement there was a report of a mid-air "riot" on a 737 jet by Celtic football fans. Ireland is already wracked by its own alcohol abuse and violence. Talk about asking for trouble. - Yours, etc.,
